Children’s authors Lance Balchin and Samantha Wheeler are heading to Gladstone in November to share their love of storytelling in a tour presented by UPLIT and Gladstone Regional Council.
The tour will include a special community event at the Gladstone Library where each author will discuss the creative process behind their writing and the unique role digital art plays in developing their characters and story world.
Lance and Samantha will also visit schools across the region, including Gladstone State Schools, Miriam Vale, Mt Larcon and schools in the Boyne Valley.

Samantha Wheeler
Samantha Wheeler lives in Brisbane with her husband, two daughters, two dogs and a horse. After a varied career involving dairyfarmers and teaching, Samantha took up writing in 2009. Her first children’sbook, Smooch & Rose, was shortlisted for the 2014 Queensland Literary Awards and the Readings Children’s Book Prize. Her second book, Spud & Charli, was imagined while riding her horse through the bush. Her third book Mister Cassowary was shortlisted for the 2016 Wilderness Society Environment Award for Children’s Literature, the Readings Children’s Book Prize, Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Award and was commended in the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales Whitley Award. Wombat Warriors is Samantha’s fourth book.
Lance Balchin
Lance Balchin grew up in the inner Melbourne suburb of Collingwood and now lives in Brisbane. He comes from a background of art, fashion and skateboard photography and has taught adults in these areas for fifteen years. He holds a Masters in Arts and also recently completed a law degree. Having always enjoyed story telling, Lance draws on literature, history and science in his writing.
